5 Indispensable Tips for Algebra Teachers

Teaching is easily one of the most challenging yet rewarding careers out there. If there was any doubt, it was quickly dispelled during the 2020 pandemic as many parents got a taste of what teachers' jobs were like when they had to take a more active role in their children's learning. Given that algebra teachers regularly provide instruction for a high volume of students, having strategies for making teaching easier can be highly beneficial.

Be Aware of Individual Needs

It isn't always practical for algebra teachers to give each student significant individual attention, no matter how much you may want to. You may be able to offset that by being aware of your students' needs and finding ways to incorporate them into your lessons. Showing the different algebraic processes as you talk about them and then providing opportunities for students to explain them back to you and to other students will help you evaluate their strengths, weaknesses, and overall comprehension. That information will help you know who needs extra attention, and in which areas they need it.

Find Ways to Make It Fun

When students have fun, they tend to learn without even realizing it. Later on, when it's time to apply what they've learned, they may feel empowered thanks to realizing that they know how to do the work. It may take a bit of coaching for students to realize that they already have the tools they need to complete their assignments, but once all the pieces fit together, they may find themselves feeling far more confident with the material. Find some fun math games to play with your students to get them more engaged in the learning process.

Use Technology

There are lots of different technology resources you can use to supplement and elevate your teaching. You may already be using learning management systems like Canvas, Schoology, Blackboard, or Google Classroom to post assignments, grades, and lessons. Those aren't the only tools at your disposal, though. If you aren't already familiar with Derivita, it's worth looking into. Derivita has a vast question bank full of algebra questions, including interactive graphs, conceptual application problems, and auto-graded, open-ended questions that provide immediate, targeted feedback. It's even capable of solving problems on its own!

All these features make Derivita a helpful teaching tool, especially when it comes to solving complex algebra equations. It can be a useful resource for assigning homework, as well as creating tests and assessments. Since it integrates seamlessly with many LMS systems, it can be a valuable resource for both you as a teacher and your students.

Challenge and Reward Students

Learning requires growth, which means you'll need to find ways to challenge your students appropriately. Asking questions that challenge your students and engage them can get them more involved in their own learning. Guiding them through challenges and setbacks can help them develop a growth mindset. You may find it helpful to encourage your students by rewarding them and recognizing them for their efforts. This can help students who have negative attitudes about math move towards a more positive outlook towards math.

Find Practical Applications for What You're Teaching

One of the most commonly asked questions regarding math is when the concepts being learned will be used in real life. Even if your students don't say it out loud, you can bet that they are thinking it. Work on finding the practical applications for the concepts you're teaching your students. You'll be giving your students the tools to solve real-world problems they're likely to encounter and giving them a greater purpose behind what they're learning.

Being an effective math teacher is challenging. Incorporating different learning styles, making it fun, using technology tools, finding ways to challenge and reward your students, and applying concepts to practical situations can help. If you do these things, you'll find that your students are more engaged in learning and develop a greater desire to learn math.
