Redefining Assessment and Understanding

Capture Thought Portable Phone Stand

This week we have a very special blog post and introduction to math innovators: Joe Diorio and Drew Ishii. Also known as the creators and founders of Capture Thought: "A portable phone stand for every student that creates a virtual classroom."

At Derivita, we love math innovations and we love getting a closer look at the student thought process too! For these reasons we created the "Show Work" capability in our platform so students could upload images of their written work directly to their digital math assignment or exam without ever having to leave their LMS.

Capture Thought allows students to take it a step further. With the Capture Thought portable phone stand, students can record themselves completing a math task or problem, narrate their actions, and then upload their videos within the Canvas LMS for teacher review. By assigning online or in-class assignments or assessments with required recordings math teachers can offer every type of student the chance to demonstrate and articulate their thinking. These recordings can offer, not just teachers, but also peers the opportunity to;

  1. understand where mistakes may be happening,
  2. how a student got the answer they did,
  3. new ways of working through a task,
  4. and a chance to connect with each other in an increasingly digital world.

And those benefits are just the tip of the iceberg as they say! But don't let us tell you about it. Check out the full length interview below.

The Interview

We got the opportunity to interview both Drew and Joe over Zoom and discuss the potentials of Capture Thought, digital math, and potentially more opportunities for collaboration! Who said anything about a Derivita and Capture Thought integration? ...Must have been that wind again.
