Make Math Homework Green!

Apr 23, 2024

Happy Earth Day!

In the spirit of Earth Day this week and celebrating our home planet, let’s talk about sustainability in math education.

Well...maybe let’s just start with
math homework first.

The shift from pencil and paper math homework assignments isn’t just about convenience, flexibility, or staying current -
although those are all great benefits - it also holds significant ecological benefits.

1. Reduced Paper Production

First and foremost, the environmental impact of paper production cannot be overlooked. Manufacturing paper consumes vast amounts of energy, water, and wood resources, leading to deforestation and habitat destruction. By embracing online platforms, we reduce the demand for paper, thereby conserving trees and minimizing the carbon footprint associated with paper production.

2. Lower Carbon Emissions from Transportation

Online math courses eliminate the need for transportation altogether. Online assignments, assessments, and instructional materials can all be accessed through an LMS like Canvas can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection. Instruction can be produced through applications like Zoom. There is no need for a car ride to transport the students to class to turn in assignments, take a test, or attend class. Imagine the fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions you save by simply not using your car to go back and forth from school. Additionally, by reducing the transportation of physical materials, K-12 schools can decrease their institution’s carbon footprint.

3. More Efficient Resource Management

Digital platforms for managing and grading math homework streamline processes and reduce resource consumption. Traditional grading methods often involve printing out assignments - which consumes ink and electricity. By switching to an online math homework platform, a district can minimize use of the physical resources. With a math courseware platform that automatically grades assignments, teachers don’t have to spend any of their or the Earth’s energy grading either! Instead, they can focus on a personalized instructional strategy for their students or give more thorough feedback.

By embracing digital solutions, schools and districts can contribute to environmental conservation efforts and improve student outcomes.
