Assistant Controller
Build the financial foundation of a growing edtech company. You’ll own the back office, touch every corner of operations, and be on a direct path to leadership, at a company where math is improving outcomes for students, helping provide them greater opportunities in college, careers, and life.
More than just the ledger.
We’re looking for someone with solid accounting fundamentals who also wants to be in the operational fabric of the business. This isn’t a heads-down bookkeeping role — it’s a high-visibility position where your fingerprints will be on everything from month-end close to HR onboarding to vendor contracts.
You’ll be the backbone of our back-office operations, reporting directly to the Operating CFO, and on a deliberate path toward Controller. We’re an early-stage company that’s past the chaos and building toward audit-ready — and we need someone who knows what that journey looks like.
If you’ve thrived in a startup environment, aren’t waiting for a manual, and want a role where your work directly enables teachers and students to succeed in math — this is it.
Key Responsibilities
Three domains, one person. That’s the job.
Accounting & GAAP
Manage the full-cycle month-end close process; ensure all financial statements are accurate and GAAP-compliant
Own accounts receivable and accounts payable, with a focus on streamlining both functions
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership and board members
Lead the transition from startup scrappiness to audit-ready processes
Operations, HR & Legal
Manage payroll processing, benefits administration, and employee onboarding/offboarding
First-line review of SaaS agreements and vendor contracts; manage cap table and state registrations
Identify bottlenecks in internal tools and implement systems that help us scale efficiently
Support data security compliance related to SOC 2 and ISO
Finance & Leadership Support
Assist in budget preparation and variance analysis to support data-driven leadership decisions
Understand and prepare key SaaS metrics for the business
Support the CEO and CFO in fundraising efforts or audit preparation as needed
Qualifications
You’re not waiting for a manual — you’re writing it. Here’s what we’re looking for.
You have a deep understanding of accounting principles, but you explain them in plain English.
You’ve worked in a startup or fast-paced small company. You build the process; you don’t wait for one to exist.
You have experience and are looking for a role that will explicitly prepare you for Controller or CFO.
You find peace in a reconciled account and a well-organized digital filing system.
Experienced with QuickBooks Online, Excel, Google Workspace, HubSpot, and modern SaaS stacks like Ramp and TriNet.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA preferred, but not required for the right experience)
Experience in EdTech or SaaS is a significant plus
Proven ability to manage confidential information with utmost discretion
Get in early. Build something lasting.
This isn’t a role where you maintain the status quo. You’re building the financial infrastructure of a growing company — and you’ll have the ownership to do it right.
You’re getting in early with a clear, explicit path to Controller and eventually CFO. This role is designed to develop you, not just use you.
Your work directly enables teachers and students to succeed in math. The financial infrastructure you build funds a mission that matters.
We value competence, initiative, transparency, kindness, and curiosity. Not as wall art — as the actual criteria for how we hire and how we work.
