THE PROBLEMS WE SOLVE

Great math teachers are invaluable. But even the best ones can't be everywhere at once.

Every math teacher faces the same ceiling: there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to create rigorous practice, respond to each student when they need help, and grade questions that often have more than one correct answer. Derivita solve this—enabling every teacher to provide every student the high-quality math support they deserve.

PROBLEM 1

Creating enough high-quality problems for practice to mastery takes hours

Mastery requires repeated, deliberate practice — but most platforms default to simplified question types because that's all they can grade. Writing rigorous, open-ended problems with enough variations for every student takes time no teacher has.

PROBLEM 2

Students need feedback right when they need it

A student working through a problem during class or independent practice can't wait for teacher feedback. Delayed feedback breaks the learning loop — and no teacher can respond to every student in the moment.

PROBLEM 3

Questions that reveal mathematical reasoning can't be auto-graded — by other platforms

Derivita is built to grade them — accepting multiple solution paths, any mathematically equivalent response, and delivering feedback tied to what the student actually wrote.

THE DERIVITA DIFFERENCE

Most K-12 math platforms are built around the questions they can easily grade — not the ones students need.

Too often, math instruction is shaped by what digital products can easily score, rather than by how students actually learn math. This leads to simplified questions, constrained responses, and practice that rewards answer guessins more than mathematical thinking. The result is a weaker picture of student understanding and less useful insight for teachers.

Derivita changes that. Its proprietary math engine—a Computer Algebra System built for teaching not just grading—generates meaningful variations for practice, interprets student responses as they are written, recognizes mathematically valid equivalents, delivers feedback tied to each answer, and grades even open-ended responses.

Here's what sets the Derivita Math Engine apart from other math products:

Math Engine Capability What It Means for Learning
Algebraic equivalence evaluation Accepts any mathematically correct form of an answer — not just the one the teacher wrote
Multiple valid solution paths Students can show their thinking their way — and still get credit
Millions of problem variations Every student gets a unique version of every problem — eliminating copying, enabling personalization
Automatic grading of open-ended responses Complex, multi-step problems graded instantly — without teacher burden
Targeted, immediate feedback Students know not just that they're wrong, but why — and what to do next

Example 1 — Equivalent expressions

Question: Write an equation of a line parallel to y = 2x.

Most K-12 platforms

y = 2x + 5 ✓ Correct
y − 7 = 2(x − 1) ✗ Incorrect

Point-slope form is mathematically correct — but the platform only accepts slope-intercept. Students learn to format answers, not understand math. The teacher sees a wrong answer that isn't wrong.

"Incorrect. Please try again."

Derivita

y = 2x + 5 ✓ Correct
y − 7 = 2(x − 1) ✓ Correct

Our CAS evaluates mathematical equivalence — any valid form is accepted. Students answer in the language of math, not the language of our input box.

Correct — your equation has slope 2 and a different y-intercept than the original. That's what parallel means.

Example 2 — Open-ended with multiple valid answers

Question: Write any quadratic function with roots at x = 2 and x = −3.

Most K-12 platforms

This question cannot be asked. The platform has no way to grade an open-ended response with infinite valid answers. So it isn't asked — ever. Students never practice this type of thinking.

Question type not supported

Not available. Try a multiple choice or numeric answer question instead.

Derivita

(x − 2)(x + 3)
x² + x − 6
2x² + 2x − 12

All three are correct — and our engine knows it. Every mathematically valid quadratic with those roots is accepted, in any form.

Correct — your function has roots at x = 2 and x = −3. Notice that scaling by any constant preserves the roots.

Example 3 — Feedback that responds to the student, not just the answer

Question: Simplify: (3x²)(4x³)

Most K-12 platforms

12x⁵
7x⁶
12x⁶

"Incorrect. The correct answer is 12x⁵."

Both wrong answers get the same response. The student who added exponents instead of multiplying gets identical feedback to the one who got the coefficient wrong. No one learns why.

Derivita

12x⁵
7x⁶
12x⁶

For 7x⁶: Your coefficients were added instead of multiplied, and the exponents were also added — check both operations.

For 12x⁶: Your coefficients are right — but when multiplying terms with the same base, exponents are added, not multiplied.

Different errors, different feedback. Every response gets a reply that addresses what that student actually did — not a generic redirect to the answer key.

THE THEORY OF ACTION BEHIND THE RESULTS

The formative feedback loop that turns productive struggle into authentic mastery.

Mastery requires three things: productive struggle, formative feedback, and deliberate practice. Great teachers have always known this. Derivita makes it available to every student — automatically, at scale, whether during class, intervention, or independent practice.

1

High-quality question

150,000+ questions written by in-house math, assessment, and curriculum experts.

2

Student attempts

Types a response in the language of math. No multiple choice. No guessing.

3

Engine understands

CAS reads what they actually wrote — not just whether it matches an answer key.

4

Targeted feedback

A response to exactly what they entered and where their thinking broke down.

5

Worked solution + retry

Full step-by-step solution. Then a regenerated problem to prove they've got it.

↩ Regenerated question returns student to step 2 — deliberate practice with real feedback, every time

THIRD-PARTY VALIDATION

Don't take our word for it.

What a third-party  2026 ESSA Level III study indicated was each additional Derivita question answered per day, an average student would be expected to perform 13 percentile points better on the Derivita math assessment.

Meaning a student at the 50th percentile who answered just one additional Derivita question per day would be expected to perform at the 63rd percentile, a 13-point gain (effect size b = 0.34; p < .001).

CURRICULUM AGNOSTIC

Supplements the curriculum
you already chose.

Derivita doesn't ask you to change your core curriculum. It amplifies it!

Most districts have spent years selecting the right core curriculum.

The last thing they need is a math tool that fights against it or requires reteaching in a different system.

Derivita aligns directly to the curricula and standards your teachers already know, so adoption is fast, content is familiar, and instructional coherence stays intact.
