A Systemic Approach to Math Improvement

More than practice.
A system for improving outcomes at scale

Most math products do one job: allow students to practice and then they check the answers. Derivita starts there and keeps going.

Derivita is a system, connecting individual practice and classwork to school, PLC, and district-level insights, designed to improve math outcomes at scale.

Two Different Jobs

A practice product ends at the student. A system reaches the whole district.

The same student response can begin and end as a score, or it can inform the teacher, the PLC, the school, and the district. That's the Derivita Difference.

A PRACTICE PRODUCT Assign a problem Student answers Score it right / wrong Stays at the student level. DERIVITA — A CONNECTED SYSTEM District insight School PLC Classroom Student response DATA RISES INSIGHT RETURNS One response informs every level — and feedback flows back.

Every question answered becomes a data point that informs instruction and decision-making at every level, all inside the LMS your teachers already use.

The DERIVITA Difference, Side by Side

Where a practice product stops. Where a system begins.

A practice product is a fine starting point, but when you need improvements at scale, your technology needs to do more than to check a problem right or wrong..

Derivita A practice product
01 · The EngineA grading engine that actually does math
The CAS evaluates mathematical equivalence. A correct answer counts no matter how it's written — alternate notations, equivalent forms, and multiple valid solution paths all do. Checks answers by matching a string. An unsimplified fraction or an equivalent expression can be marked wrong even when the math is right.
A live keystroke preview shows students exactly how their expression is being read before they submit, so attempts are spent on math, not formatting. Limited attempts often get spent decoding the format the system expects, then it's on to a brand-new problem.
Accommodates the variations a skilled teacher would accept on paper — and stays silent rather than offering feedback that could mislead. Can require specific steps or procedures that were never taught in class, adding friction unrelated to understanding.
02 · The LearningBuilt for reasoning, not recall
Derivita identifies the likely mistake and delivers targeted, error-specific feedback tied to what the student was trying to do. When students are stuck, "help" is usually a static video or hint that doesn't respond to their actual error.
Open-ended responses mean thinking can't be shortcut. Students construct answers rather than copy them — and Focus Mode adds assessment security. Answers are easy to find on outside apps and sites, so students can submit without ever engaging the mathematics.
150,000+ expert-authored questions designed to require reasoning. Students construct and symbolically express mathematical ideas — productive struggle, not answer submission. Built primarily for repetitive drill: students practice procedures without developing real mathematical reasoning.
03 · The SystemFrom a classroom tool to a connected system
A force multiplier for teachers. SpotCheck powers whole-class discourse and Building Thinking Classrooms workflows, while auto-grading and worked solutions give time back to instruction. Works as a digital workbook — it assigns and checks, but doesn't support the instructional work teachers actually do.
Built by the co-founder of Canvas/Instructure. LMS integration is structural, not bolted on — assignments, grades, and data flow through the tools teachers already use. Grade sync and LMS integration can be unreliable, leaving teachers with parallel workflows and manual data entry.
Data connects across every level — student, classroom, school, PLC, and district. Blueprint reporting gives administrators actionable visibility at scale. Reporting tends to stop at the classroom, with little meaningful visibility across schools or the district.
